Sheesh. I blame my pneumonia-induced brain fog but for a paragraph or two I was ready to launch a rescue mission because the snarkmistress was clearly being held under duress.

Then I recovered my senses. Happy New Year!

Your concern is truly touching and very much appreciated. You never know, so stay alert! And a speedy recovery from the pneumonia! Nasty business.

Happy New Year!

Stop with your foolishness….. you know fossil fuels are the problem and the glorious solution for their evilness is the free energy provided by wind and solar…….even the most talented writer can’t spin that right! Love your work!

Thank you Irina! The Brits nearly had a chance to get angry earlier this week: https://inews.co.uk/news/how-energy-grid-whisker-blackouts-sub-zero-conditions-3471421 More prophecy: we can expect a lot about Demand Response in 2025 and consequent digestive disorders due to breakfast at 4am following dinner at 1am. Food flasks will sell out. Dunkelflaute will be adopted by the English language, used with frequent reference to its spelling: "the 'f' in Dunkeflaute", or something similar.

I'[m sure there will be many such chances going forward. I am actually stunned that no one stormed Parliament after that disgraceful vote on the national inquiry into rape gangs.

With every column, you "bring the meats." You pack more real info into one column than 90% of yappers out there.

Thank you very much. This means a lot.

Best line in the overall lovely piece?

" It’s beautiful, the way a nuclear mushroom is beautiful..."

And here we thought things were intersting already...I get the sense they will become more so!

Expand full comment

It was no joke, either. I had this sudden realisation a long time ago in photography class that beauty was not a moral category, although I'm sure opinions differ on that. There is beauty in destruction, if done right, which is how nature does it... and nuclear bombs, apparently. Of course, from a moral perspective I'd much rather we're spared that particular manifestation of beauty.

Yesterday, a reporter in LA for (UK) Channel 4 News was - as he put it - on the front-line of the climate crisis - as wildfires raged in the background. A few days ago the UK was 580MW away from lights out as favourable winds were unfavourable, and the Sun she did not shine. European Interconnecter to the rescue! But… strange to report the wind and Sun were misbehaving in Europe and the weather was cold too, so no electricity to spare for Bonkers Britain. Apparently, “they” had underestimated demand by 3GW because unusually in Britain’s Winter it got very cold and dark and people wanted more electricity.

Expand full comment

Yes, the usual carrots are all over the place crying climate change but Californians seem to know better than agreeing with them.

I just checked electricity maps last night and the UK was getting almost all of its electricity from gas... Hope you don't run out soon.

I admit I had to google rutilated and am very flattered by this wonderful compliment, not least because I am a great admirer of all minerals. Thank you!

Here in Oregon, my fight (now in round 2) with Pacific Power is pivotal for me; unless I can get them to replace the Idiotmeter with the old analog style, for free, I will have to leave my house. I am having heart palps that have dropped me to the ground twice, and my ears ring constantly if the power is on, electrifying the whole house with thousands of signal spikes per day. The problems started within 3 months of the installation of the damn thing in 2019. If you are waking up at 3am for no reason, it's probably your meter. I must turn off the breaker at night to get decent sleep.

This sounds really, really bad. I wish you victory in this fight, and a speedy one.

Great article discussing heat pump sales, electric vehicle sales, wind and solar energy, Europe's geography, turbines, the automotive industry, cheaper energy, the net-zero transition, fossil fuels, and more. Thank you for sharing.

Demand response is such a positive sounding way to describe rationing. While the climate crazies may not understand the first thing about physics, math or climate, they do have an excellent track record of weaponizing the English language to do their bidding. After all, there is nothing warm and fuzzy about dunkelflaute, it is very clearly harsh. but demand response sounds so noble and virtuous. at least until they shut off your heat on the coldest day of the year!

Yep. It sounds noble and good, and they freaking know it and that's one of my top reasons to feel an absence of any positive emotions towards them.

Irina, You summed it all very well, a reflection of science and economics "education" failure in the collective west. I am not sure what these so-called world leaders were taught and/or learned in their elite schools. They neither have morality nor scientific reasoning abilities.

Thank you! Whatever they learned at school has been long forgotten, I'm sure.

What else can you say? With the facts in the books the greenies and leftists (mostly they are both) double down with rhetoric and mantra ignoring the facts. But the laws of physics, chemistry, and math fuel common sense thinkers that scoff at the greenie transition. There is no transition; only costly additions, that are very expensive compared to the predecessor processes. But that’s why the existing processes became that due to cost effectiveness and efficiency and reliability. The greenie alternatives aren’t new discoveries. But greenies can’t read so history escapes them.

My prediction for 2025 is that it will be a rough road as the greenies will resistant with any disruption they can including blocking roads, civil violence protesting, and extreme logic and law defying lawfare. They have no shame, tgey are deranged and deluded.

Indeed, it will be a rough one -- for them. And that's good.

My top 10 predictions for 2025 (and parts of 2026):

1) Denmark will lease Greenland to the EU, because dammit the US can't have it in their grubby little chicken wing holders. EU will flourish with all the newfound(land) energy!

2) It's maybe not Heatpump sales, but actual Heatpumps explode because they question their very existence and mass-suicide? OK, that one was a bit harsh.

3) The New Green Deal gets to be 6 years, has to attend school and soon will learn about the physical and financial folly in which it is anchored. But first it'll have to enter puberty, after which it'll be a pouty teenager that hates his* parents come 2031 (*yes, the New Green Deal is a male)

4) Saxo Bank (amonst dozens of others) will be caught in the "Big Financial Bubble" Crisis of 2025+ - which is hinged around Basel III being rejected and remolded by powerful lobbyist orgs in the US and hence their leverage never got checked again in stress tests. Because who wants to do a "stress test" when they can do a "financial yoga retreat" and forget about all that leverage. The rest of society will need to bail out the banking system and will say: Ouchie!

5) Trump, Ramsawamy & Musky will not shave off even $1 BN net from the US budget. Instead they'll pretend they never told anyone about any savings plan, make up some wild numbers where they supposedly saved the tax payers "many, many beautiful Billions", according to Trump, all the while he's handing out some more subsidies to their ilk.

6) Musk, after creating a somewhat wacky AI companion named Bonkerz, can peacefully prepare to fly to Mars to prevent mankind from getting extinct on the red planet. Or, you know, him and Bezos will do some arm wrestling to see who can actually fly first.

7) And what about that Virgin guy, what's his face, ah yes - Richard Branson, he'll take a fully-tricked-out space motorbike in a daring plan to slingshot to Venus. Although he'll miss and drift into unknown milky way space, to be likely found by an alien race hundreds of light years away in... well, hundreds of light years, you bozos.

8) In a last-ditch effort to prevent global warming for good, the global coastline populace is being called on to freeze ice cubes overnight for every single day in their whole freezers (ie tons of ice cubes) and then throw them out in the ocean. While the landlubbers will need to manually pedal on dynamo bikes to turn all the wind turbines, which are standing still because... mainly the wind seems to have disappeared. It'll ge a great effort to finally cool off the planet.

9) EVs will get self-aware thanks to being software updated with AI Shopping and Driving Agents and engage in "Blood Drive"-style crash car races, with no regards to human meatbag life.

10) Probably only one or maybe two of these predictions will come true and I'll hang my head in shame.

I love these! And I agree many are likely to come true.
