The US has simply proved yet again Lord Palmerston's wise observation of 150 years ago: "We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and those interests it is our duty to follow."

The Europeans have been happy to free ride off America's defense for over half a century, all the while happily using the country's vast consumer market as the source for much of its prosperity. German mercantilism has been particularly marked. Now the shoe's on the other foot, but Macron naively appears shocked by this.

The IRA or Inflation Resurgence Act does zip for "Clean Energy". It is a Malthusian destruction of America's energy supply. Europe is doing the same. Throwing $trillions down the sewer on nutty wind & solar scams while pushing personal BEVs is a recipe for economic disaster. Worsened even more than that by their Net Zero scams which is really just the same old Carbon Trading scams, like the failed Cap & Trade scam, which did zip to reduce emissions, but was wonderful for giving government guaranteed profits for wealthy, unscrupulous investors.

If they REALLY cared about "Clean Energy" and their economic vitality they would do just what China is doing, undertaking a rapid build-out of Nuclear Power. Fact: They ain't, so they don't.

“Winning” the Degrowth Olympics isn’t really winning.

€1T and counting spent in the last few decades could have decarbonized the entire electricity system of the EU (and the UK) with 1970s Nuclear technology. Oh well!

It is a race and Europe is losing because of overregulation (structural problem of the Single Market) and high energy prices (structural problem for not wanting to drill for shale over here but happily buying it from the US).

It makes me wonder if the Germans, instead of all the regas FSRUs, should invest in some US liquefaction facilities. You know, to actually make the LNG they so eagerly want to import now...

weather you like or dislike biden you have to respect him for at the core of everything he does is the iron rule of political life - " my job is to reward my allies and punish my enemies" and at that no one is better than biden

To me, the interesting question is what is going to happen to the ongoing support for Ukraine as the bills start to really pile up? Since things like Social Security and pension schemes are untouchable on both sides of he Atlantic, I expect that at some point, and potentially soon, the fiscal reality will hit that wasting an additional several trillion of dollars or euros on efforts to reduce a trace element in the atmosphere is going to find less and less support. considering we have probably already wasted some 2-3 trillion and made essentially no dent in the "problem" will they throw Zelenskiy under the bus to continue on this impossible quest?
