I’ve noticed the headlines of my posts recently range from gloomy to outright apocalyptic and I’m sorry if that depresses anyone but I’ve got 30 years of Gothic music and existentialist literature fandom behind me.
Yes, EU energy topics are currently depressing, but that is what happens when decisions are left to the politicians. But your coverage has been both excellent and hysterical. Wishing you continued success.
Irina, help me understand something. The EU is in the process of embargoing Russian fuels, oil, and gas. Gas which now has no pipelines to flow through anymore so I guess a moot point. But then what exactly are they planning to cap - western and "allied" sources? Am I missing something?
Long-term contracts should have clauses that protect the buyer and seller from market fluctuations. If they do agree on caps, which I doubt, prices might fall as cargoes move away from Europe.
Price cap is like saying, should things work against me, someone else will foot the bill. With the Nordstream pipeline explosion, I don't think price cap is still necessary. Think of whether that passage will be revitalized first, so supplies can still run through it. Or get a heavier supply from all across the atlantic without a price cap.
Thanks. When coupled to their pig headedness wrt sticking with ruinables, you just have to shake your head. Apparently sticking to your guns trumps making life easier for your people! Just defies logic that anyone could still believe the nonsense purveyed by the alarmists.

I know it is unkind -BUT- I look forward to the next 2 years with some excitement and a large bowl of metaphysical and physical popcorn ! As I tell my younger wife -" its good to be old in these times"
as a follow up - you had written about doing some "stand up comedy regarding energy " the comedians at the EU beat you to it ! the equivalent of a comedy club funded by the tax payers of europe ! keep in confidential but the rumor is europe's biggest comedian - "PUTY" is a big fan of the EU
Shame that the Nordstream pipelines have been blown up! Looks like they will be no gas going through that system so Europe will only be getting minimal Russian Gas!
Is the notion viable that Gazprom can now claim "Force Majeure" on the undelivered gas to Europe as the pipelines have been blown up by an unforeseen event? Implicit in that theory, is that Gazprom are thinking that they will be able to trade again with Europe in the future? At this juncture, how likely a scenario is that?
Talking about "Price Caps" and the like. The UK's methods to lessen the burden on its citizens are in more of a mess , as the GBP is "falling like a stone" against the $US because of inept Government. The net result is they are going to be paying more for incoming LNG this winter! The UK are already "dishing out" rebates to its citizens to offset high domestic energy prices, so do they increase the rebates?
Thank you, Ms Slav. I think you are correct; this is all about blame shifting to try to save their jobs.
Probably but it looks a lot like self-sabotage.
"The obvious problem, of course, is the sellers’ opinion on the matter, which nobody could expect to be favourable."
I swear, you make me laugh out loud 10 times in every one of these pieces. Thank you. :)
Glad to hear it. Laughter is, after all, the best medicine. 😁
Thank you. We appreciate your searching the current Gothic proclamations for that glimmer of positivity.
These people are no Goths. They're emos at best.

You're forgetting the Ukrainian pipes, those are still functioning. Otherwise, you're spot on.
Bring the doom and gloom- it is the only thing that makes me feel sane right now anyway!
You and me both.
Any thoughts on price cap impacts to LNG prices outside of Europe? Long-term contracts?

Ruinables! This is brilliant.
I like it. The Ruinables. Also called The UnReliables. I'm going to borrow that. Thanks.
When it seems too gloomy visit the outdoors, hike or drive. Doom seems less important and clears the head. Beats drugs and too much alcohol.

You're absolutely right. Right now I'm very excited about mu budding chrysanthemums and very much enjoying autumn as a whole. Nature is a healer.

Same. It may be unkind but it's healthy.

Ah, but they don't do it on purpose!

Somebody said that Russia has written off Europe as a trading partner. I'm afraid I have to agree.

And how long do they keep dishing them out?
“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.”
Still gives me goose bumps even though I read it a hundred years ago.
European nations are turning their desperation for natural gas into market leverage to demand lowered prices.
Take a weakness and declare it a strength. Its pure genius. I hope sellers don't notice.
Well put. Last I read, they were going to ask Algeria to consider selling them gas at lower prices...
Algeria?
Rich Europe is asking poor Algeria for a discount. So absurd.
Arrogant is what it is. Obscenely arrogant.
There is no end to the things 'Govt' will do to make things worse for us all.
It is certainly beginning to look like it.
