Free will makes sense on a personal scale. But on a mass scale most people are pretty simple and dumb. They need to be told what to do. Thats why communism doesn't work.
If your 5 year old child only wants to eat candy, would you let them exercise their free will? That's what happened to Americans. Now you have additional cost of paying for Healthcare of these obese kids throughout their life via taxes.
Well, that's what laws are for, to keep us in check. Overdoing it with telling people what to do (especially while the tellers do the opposite) is why communism failed.

That's an interesting perspective, thanks for sharing it. I don't equate having a free will with abusing it but some may do.
