You know what’s hilarious? Herr Starmer promising the UK will lead in AI (will it be powered with peat)? And then he wants to regulate it (which means making sure an AI picture of George Washington will depict a short, obese, trans something or other that is from somewhere in the southern hemisphere). Now, that’s funny!

Irina, to borrow a baseball analogy, you are batting .400+. That puts you atop the league, and you are trouncing the transition clownage cabal.

I will take your word for it since baseball is a complete mystery to me. Thank you!

My attention turns to those who want to electrify the US train systems. As an EMS (electro mechanically sensitive) person, I have to pray people wake up to why this is very bad for both people riding trains and people living near tracks. The people who tell me 'those EMF problems have been solved' assume so and have not truly verified. I will also not get into an electric or hybrid vehicle anymore, for obvious reasons. Our bodies run on small electro magnetic energies which are overwhelmed and damaged in high EMF.

“There have been many changes to PV module design and materials in that time.” Yes, yes… but much cheaper, and you do get what you pay for.

“… the UK’s Prime Minister has no idea what AI means and how it works, and, two, he doesn’t know what words mean.” In his case it means Absent Intelligence.

How beautifully put!

Excellent!

As for Keir Starmer (the 'Granny Embalmer') he is completely delusional. He seems to be blissfully unaware that the likes of Microsoft, Google et al are already acquiring their own power stations in anticipation of the enormous energy required by AI data centres. In the UK we certainly do have expertise in AI but sadly let down by the evangelistic obsession with Net Zero by Milibrain and Starmer. The AI starting gun has already been fired, our competitors are off down the track and our scientists and engineers have their hands and legs tied by renewable madness.

I can't not ask this: why the Granny Embalmer?

I can't take the credit for this as I heard it somewhere else, but my interpretation is that he's trying to freeze us to death and he doesn't want anyone to notice.

"A teachable moment"....but only if you are a critical thinker. Your comment on Starmer is spot on. It applies to all of the netzero bobbleheads. They don't know what words mean. Great way to end the work week. Thanks. 🤘😎🤘

Good and sobering point. You have to want to learn if you are to learn. Instead, we mostly have utter refusal to learn.

After ESG burns out and the ultra rich money managers have cleaned up and tilted the game in their favor again, they will undoubtedly put together another scheme. Highly recommend Vivek Ramaswamy’s book Capitalist Punishment. He’s got it summarized perfectly!

Thank you Irina. This may amuse if you haven't seen it: "POLITICO Europe: EU devours Russian gas at record speed despite cutoff" https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-devouring-russian-gas-at-record-speed-despite-cut-off-sanctions-war-ukraine/

Joining in the fun with the EIA and IEA, and indeed any other permutation of the three letters, my own prediction is that by 2050 there will still be individuals and organisations making rubbish forecasts.

While I'm about it, from the multi-tasking land that is to be both a clean energy and AI superpower, I predict that before long I will be issued with a time slot and machine I have to pedal furiously to help keep the country's lights on. Obesity crisis solved too - what's not to like?

Now that’s a great idea!! Connect every fitness gym to the grid and pay people to attend spin classes! But only when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing!

There was a memorable scene in Kusturica's "Underground" where characters did exactly that in order to be able to power the radio in their bunker. It was supposed to be a comic scene.

The predicament is, and it is a predicament, that at the other end of the energy field Oil’s veil is slipping, and will continue slipping over this decade, until everyone knows Oil is in its death throes, maybe then Irina you can be just as cynical about that👇

This from Telegraph 16 January 2025 - Jonathan Leak - “‘Dusk for Norway is dawn for Russia’: Alarm as gas fields supplying the UK begin to run out”👇

“According to a new report from the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD), the country’s oil and gas supplies peaked last year and are expected to dwindle from now on.”👇

….although there is no escaping from the fact that Norway’s best oil and gas fields are becoming increasingly depleted.👇

“We expect overall production to decline in the later 2020s,” the report from the Norwegian Offshore Directorate said.👇

Over the next decade, UK production is [North Sea] expected to decline by a further 70pc, meaning reliance on costly imported gas will increase in the coming years.👇

….the UK and the rest of Europe now face the prospect of being forced into the arms of countries like Russia if Norway starts to turn off the taps.”🤔

It's not me who's cynical, Barry, it's life. The UK wouldn't have to rely on imports if it supported its own oil and gas industry. As for peak oil -- yes, we'll get there eventually. The date of that eventuality, however, remains uncertain.

P.S. I myself and most Bulgarians have zero problem with Russian oil and gas. For those who do have a problem for political reasons, well, tough.

"There have been many changes to PV module design and materials in that time. Several changes have increased the risk of glass breakage. But there is probably no single change that is responsible for the problem."

If they're like the TV panel makers, it will be because they've made the glass thinner, which saves material and shipping costs, but increases breakage. I've seen TVs that will self destruct if you gently lift up the bottom edge so that you can install the feet. Much better to leave them in the box, set the box upside down, open the bottom and cut the cardboard to make room for the legs to stick out, before rotating it back rightside up for box removal.

Okay, wandered into the weeds. My money is on thin glass.

I found that conclusion a bit puzzling. So what if there is not one single change that caused it? Just address all the many changes that did.

Expand full comment

Yes, I guess another possibility is making the supporting frame flimsier. I've seen that in TVs as well.

I used to test TVs for Roku, so I've seen a lot of TVs from different manufacturers.

Apparently, how these AIs get trained is critical. Starmer may be thinking, we'll train up a few in our image and try to make them dominant. This was the Biden administration's plan according to Marc Andreesen.

Interesting talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z1JFCARXpA

I like Peterson's emphasis on the idea that we really, really want to make sure we teach AIs altruism.

Expand full comment

I can't see how we can make sure we do this. Regulate it? There's always a way around.

I agree. It's going to be dangerous times. Abandoning AI doesn't appear to be an option, because other nations will go full tilt regardless of what we do.

It's gonna be a whole new arms-style race, I guess. I hope we don't get the -- was it "The Forbin Project" based on the book(s) "Colossus" by Dennis Feltham Jones, in which, if I remember correctly, Colossus notices the presence of this other huge AI (the Russian one) and decides to abandon its makers and team up with the other AI instead.

I may be assigning a remembered plot to the wrong book/film though. It's been decades.

I also hope we don't get there. The green carrots may be funny but AI is not.

"green carrots"? Not making the connection, but it's early here.

Well, to avoid using the word "morons" because I'm polite, I've taken to using the English translation of the Welsh "moron", which means carrot. I do hope you've had your coffee, I think I confused myself a little right now. :D

Thank you for the bit of etymology. Or is that the history of the word, or just a chance cognate?
