The western establishment's plan to phase out the economy and living standards for the serfs just means someone else will use the extra productivity the oil enables to fight poverty (or rent seek more depending on culture).
Talking of rent-seeking... All that low density/high land use power subsidies for wind just end up in the land owners bank account.
So you can see why the establishment love plant-starving policies. The whole WEFist push seems to be a push for neo-Feudalism.
except this time there is intellectual feudalism from patent and copyright title in addition to land title's unearned income being subsidized plus tax-breaks.
It would all be hilarious if it wasn't so scary. Some of these people actually believe this propaganda. The elites really are willing to let us commoners freeze in the dark to prove how green they are.
Why does nobody understand that EV's will not impact oil demand? Even with 100% EV's, there will be so much gasoline floating around we won't know what to do with it. We will drown in it. Nobody understands refining it seems; we will still need the barrels for other things like diesel and so on
Don't forget the electrification of heavy transport and the desire to try to use an extremely hazardous substance, ammonia, in shipping. On a serious note, most locomotives these days are already electrified to an extent, but they use diesel to run the generators.
Easy - the oil the refineries can burn it off, like oil companies burn off excess gas from wells. This will be declared ‘carbon neutral’ as is burning wood & other biomass, and burning ethanol.
“Nobody understands refining it seems; we will still need the barrels for other things like diesel and so on”
This is a myth, probably one that Oil/Refining Companies would wish us all to believe.
Paul Martin of Spitfire Research Inc who doe’s know a thing or two (an expert) about refining was on “Just Have A Think” explaining to David Borlace (podcast’s host) that without any new innovations refineries can reform products to what’s required without over producing products the world doesn’t require. So maybe you need to check it out, then spread the word:- “Just Have A Think - How can we stop burning fossil fuels if we still need everything else they make?”🤔
Carbon credits are beginning to seem like the NFT's of the green movement. It's such a perfect business - arguing over something you can't see, can't taste, and have difficulty measuring. Meanwhile in the US, we need to set up the system for collecting the methane penalties that are on the way. Zelle your fees to 1-800-METHANE (please don't do this, although I'm sure someone will set this up, it won't be the US Government. It would require a sense of humor.)
“The UK may be failing in its climate change crusade but EVs are doing just great.” Just a little context. (Rounded numbers) The number of road vehicles in the UK is 40.5 million. Cars - 35 million of which 2% are BEVs. Vans - 4.8 million of which 0.6% BEVs. Buses - 74 500 of which 1.3% are BEVs. Trucks - 600 000 of which 0.1% are BEVs.
As can be seen EVs are doing just “great”. It’s a relief they are not doing poorly. Sales of ICE will be banned after 2035, but quotas have been set to force sales away from ICE in 2030. Now that’s going to require a lot of chargers throughout the land, a lot of wind turbines, a lot of upgrades to the entire distribution network, a lot of copper wire, copper, copper ore - and of course £££££billions.
Again excellent humour Irina. All these doom mongers who claim to care for the future of the planet and future generations don't seem remotely concerned that all these subsides increase Goct borrowing, which in turn places massive burden on future generations. Lefties have always been selfish IMO and this is yet another example.... spend today and ask others to repay tomorrow. But don't forget, they are the ones who are caring for the future😄
In truth the distinction between Left and Right is wanning. Its now all about Authoritarians v Freedom Lovers (Libertarians). I strongly suspect were all in the same camp👍
Irina, knock WT’s PVP’s and BEV’s as much as you like but an energy transition based on alternative energy sources and storage encompassing WT’s, PVP’s and energy consuming BEV’s is in motion, and yes it’s a behemoth of a challenge. Like most things it starts very slowly until momentum builds and a.tipping point is reach, during that time what doesn’t work or has problems that can’t be resolved get kicked out, that’s the nature of engineering efficiency and competition. Public or private, where big money is involved you’ll find cheating, nepotism and corruption, it has happened since time in memorial. China is the largest producer and installer of Alternative Energy products and systems, and yes they’re also largest user of FREE FINITE Flammable Fossils (FFFF’s). Cheap FFFF’s have been both a blessing and a curse, the curse being the pollution, causing thick choking smogs especially in their cities, and boy do they have big cities, resulting in deaths from respiratory problems rising exponentially. The decision was made to remove Coal Fired Power Stations (CFPS’s) from inside of cities, they weren’t inside the city to start with but with their exceptional growth that’s where they ended up. This is one of reasons China has and is building so many CFPS’s, one demolished two built remote from city. They have also mandated for scooters, automobiles, taxis’s, buses etc. to be electric in cities . China is learning very quickly how and what works in an integrated alternative energy system, and at scale. If approached or they’re approached by other countries government’s urban developers they can show city sized working models to backup their knowledge and expertise claims.
There’s only one way FFFF’s costs over time will go and that’s up, as everything that humanity eats and produces has an energy cost embedded in it, that inflationary cost hits developing countries most🤔
Kind of a bad couple of days for the poor COPO28, Abdul and Sultan go full Elon on them, the British parliament votes against the electric car mandate and Germany says it might take them a teensy bit longer to kick the coal habit.
I tried, but couldn't quiet avoid looking at some of the photos of the attendees... I think I have figured out the problem. White People.
Why is it that everybody else has figured it out? Let's do roll call
China - No... but we'll sell you stuff to help you self destruct
Japan - No back to nuclear
Africa - No but show us the money
India - No Get lost
South America - No Hasta la Vista
Middle east - No do totally piss off
Indonesia and other Asian countries - No. We're with China
Europe, US, Austrialia, Britian, Canada -- HELL YA. We'll spend money we don't have to solve a problem we made up! Send us the bill.
We were pretty good for a while. Built great countries, democracy, split the atom... on and on.
Pretty dumb for a while actually, or just really impoverished of mind and homeless of heart. I think the indigenous folks the Romans conquered were people we could have learned from.
Must be the natural order of things, I don't know. A lot of people are making parallels between the current West and the Roman empire. Could be a coincidence, of course.
Brilliant, hard-hitting, insightful analysis of COP 28. There's no need to read anything else on the topic. I'm glad that independent journalism and analysis still thrives. Thank you!

odd, that. I've been thinking about a return to feudalism quite often lately as the illusion of democracy falls apart.

Not ‘willing’ - determined.
It is scary. Mocking it is the way I try to preserve my sanity.

Oh, a lot of people understand it very well. And they talk about it, may they live long and healthy lives.

"Selling like hotcakes" as that FT gentleman said...
Some of them VERY hot - if you get my meaning. 😄
Oh, what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practice to deceive!
“Marmion” - Sir Walter Scott
I appreciate the links you provide. Very illuminating as to the ultimate absurdity of what you highlight here.
Wise man, Scott was. Without the links someone might think I'm making this up. Sadly, I can't.

Hey, I'm a Leftie and I'm only reasonably selfish. :D The new Left has very little to do with the old Left, which it evolved from, embarrassingly.
Become a Georgist (Adam Smith Capitalist) then all the uni-parties hate you.
In truth the distinction between Left and Right is wanning. Its now all about Authoritarians v Freedom Lovers (Libertarians). I strongly suspect were all in the same camp👍
Yes, those words no longer mean what they used to mean. Authoritarians versus Freedom Lovers is good!
I wear my ‘I ❤️ CO2’ hat and t-shirt all over Houston and the oil patch towns/cities I visit.
What a great idea for a T-shirt! I'm making some for myself and the kid. Thanks!
👍
One aspect of Canada's Steven Guilbeault to keep in mind: he's a communist like his boss, Dear Leader Justin.
Both of them are doing to Canada what Stalin did to the Soviet Union with his "Five-Year Plans".
I hope people vote them out before it's too late.

That's it right there: "impoverished of mind and homeless of heart". Thank you for summing it up so well.
"Do totally piss off" is the best! :D
Must be the natural order of things, I don't know. A lot of people are making parallels between the current West and the Roman empire. Could be a coincidence, of course.
All these circuses but where is the bread?
It's baking as we speak, enriched with organic nutrients and some chitin, which "is shown to be beneficial to the gut and immune system."
